Abstract

The Wrist is a complex joint, considered by the majority of orthopedic surgeon as an articulation with an accessory function. The wrist anatomy is complex as its biomechanics with contradictory good functional results even with important post traumatic deformations. As for the shoulder the arthroscopy was a great help for the knowledge of the intra-articular anatomy and biomechanics of this complex joint concerning three specific articular spaces and 10 bones.

After some sporadic cases reports of wrist arthroscopy during the beginning of the Twenties century the real development of wrist arthroscopy began with the twenty first century with some surgeons in USA but also in France and Europe (Ch Mathoulin, Didier Fontes).

These two surgeons imagined and created in March 2005 a scientific society named: “Groupe Européen d’Arthroscopy du Poignet: GEAP” to promote wrist surgery and wrist arthroscopy. The teaching was the most important part of the goal of this society with a very important tripod: International courses in cadaver lab on fresh cadavers (IRCAD and affiliated courses); “Buddy System” by mentors on wrist arthroscopy (Identification of centers and mentors for fellowship); and more recently webinar formation and internet platform for complex cases sharing.

Cadavers courses are divided in basic , advanced and master courses in centers like IRCAD in France (Strasbourg), Brazil (Baretos) and Tai Wan (Taichung).

The “Buddy System” is developed all around the world to help the young surgeons to identify the good indications, with a good examination practice and good surgical realization in quality label wrist arthroscopy centers. “IWC fellowship” is specially dedicated for that. The WAT (Wrist Arthroscopy Tour) Is specifically developed in France for that with a group of French surgeons who organize one time a year a week session for a limited number of foreign surgeons who want to learn wrist arthroscopy. The session is one week long and take place in 4 or 5 centers in France. The participants go from one center to another to see a mentor operating wrist arthroscopy.

The webinar formation is now a vey important medium of formation and especially after COVID 19 Pendemy.
This teaching tripod is essential for a real good formation in wrist arthroscopy.
