Abstract

Regular FIT testing is associated with a 21% reduction in the risk of CRC in women and a 24% reduction in men. In France, performing an FIT test on a symptomatic patient is considered a misuse of the test. Offering a colonoscopy provides a benefit equivalent to that of offering an FIT test over a 10-year period. In France, regular FIT testing is more cost-effective. Preventive colonoscopy, which remains the most effective method, is an option for patients who are informed of its risks and limitations. Promoting regular physical activity—such as 30 minutes of walking 5 times a week—and combating a sedentary lifestyle are factors in preventing CRC. Identifying patients who are overweight, obese, or diabetic is a key strategy for targeted CRC prevention. Reducing consumption of processed meats and red meat, as well as ultra-processed foods, and increasing intake of fiber, dairy products, and calcium, along with adopting a balanced Mediterranean-style diet, should be discussed during the consultation and promoted through public health policies. Reducing alcohol consumption and smoking cessation should be recommended during consultations. Public health policies (taxation, advertising restrictions, labeling, cessation programs) are effective tools for reduction of CCR burden.
