Abstract

Antibiotic resistance is classified among the future threats affecting the outcomes of patients. An association is persistently reported between the misuse of antibiotics and the emergence of multiresistant bacteria increasing the risk of therapeutic failure.
Surgical antibiotic prophylaxis aims at reducing the incidence of surgical site infections (SSI), a dreaded complication in the surgical environment. However, surgical antibiotic prophylaxis represents around 25% of the antibiotic use of a healthcare establishment.
Recent practice guidelines, based on recent literature and validated by 24 scientific societies, has specified the conditions for applying antibiotic prophylaxis. These recommendations have been the source of fruitful discussions that question on the complex relationships between the surgical world and antibiotic resistance and highlight the necessary acculturation of the surgeons to the concept of antibiotic resistance.
