Abstract

Technical skills are of utmost importance, in surgery and specially in laparoscopy, but in addition surgeon has to be prepared to face complications when they occur.
Fortunately, complications are rare but as a result the surgeon is usually not prepared: so non-technical skills are the skills which allow to have a proper reaction in such situations.
Awareness, decision making, team work and leadership are the pillars of non-technical skills(sometimes unproperly named soft skills)
This lecture tries to demonstrate how non-technical management of complications are critical to avoid that a sudden complication leads to a surgical disaster.
