Risk mapping in the operating theater and interventional room:
what frequency? what recommendations?
Risk mapping analyzes all claims reported to insurers, and assesses their financial consequences. Despite 2020 being a particular year due to the pandemic, the main trends remain current. New risks are emerging, such as cyber-risk (computer or internet attack), staff shortages and practitioner/establishment rapport. The significant drop in claims relating to surgery continues regardless of the COVID crisis. Conversely, the cost of compensation continues to rise, thereby neutralizing the effect of frequency reduction. A detailed analysis of complaint factors is therefore useful for targeting areas for practice improvement to limit the number of convictions. Infection management, through lack of traceability or through inappropriate prescription, remains a frequent source of complaints, but training efforts are gradually correcting these practices. Behavior, professional attitudes, and non-compliance with the recommendations of medical Societies often remain source of complaints, although some improvement is noticeable. For example, we observe better compliance with HAS recommendations in bariatric surgery. Also, only about 20% of claim files lead to compensation, which is also a result of case defense quality. The main recommendations relate to pursuing the training efforts for practitioners, flawless rigor and traceability of practices, and compliance with the recommendations regularly updated by medical Societies.
