Abstract
Orthotaxy, founded in Grenoble in 2009, specialized in developing innovative solutions for orthopedic surgery. After an initial focus on preoperative planning and patient-specific cutting guides, the company pivoted to robotics in 2015 before being acquired by Johnson & Johnson in 2018. Today, Orthotaxy is the spearhead of research and development activities around Depuy Synthes' VELYS solutions. Through its history, we will attempt to illustrate how a robotic system for surgery can be designed in France, then manufactured, maintained and improved within a multinational and distributed around the world. Beyond the purely technical challenge, we will dwell on other major issues such as regulation and product lifecycle management. We will finish with an outlook on the evolution of robotic systems and the parallel development of alternative solutions to assist the surgeon and broaden the range of tools at their disposal.
