Emergency colic surgery: experience of the army health service at the Conakry Military Hospital Republic of Guinea

In countries south of the Sahara, the incidence of emergency colic pathologies continues to increase. Colon surgery plays an important role in the management of abdominal emergencies; surgical treatment of the colon takes care of either obstructions or peritonitis. The techniques linked to the management strategy are multiple and depend on the general condition of the patient, the lesion assessment and the experience of the surgeon. The objective of our study is to share our experience of emergency colon surgery in precarious situations. We report the results of a three-year descriptive single-center retrospective study from September 1, 2019 to September 30, 2022. During which we collected 96 patients received and treated for emergency colon surgery. Sigmoid volvulus, colic wounds and peritonitis were the most common pathologies. Our treatment strategy was adapted for each patient according to our available resources.
