Surgery in augmented reality: overview

Abstract
The late 2010s saw the emergence of augmented reality headsets. Adoption of these headsets has been limited to a few specific fields, including healthcare, and more specifically surgery. They bring new functionalities to the operating room, or offer a potentially more flexible, less expensive, or more efficient alternative to other systems. Identified uses include advanced anatomy visualization, data consultation, navigation, and remote assistance.
This recent technology has not yet been widely adopted by surgeons, although it can be applied to many specialties and brings added value to the execution of various surgeries. This low uptake is explained by the youth of the technology, the lack of clinical evidence and publications on the benefits of these systems, and the ability of manufacturers to develop these technologies.
