Abstract

This study examines the trends in specialty choice among French medical graduates (FMG) from 2017 to 2022, focusing on surgical specialties and gender distribution. Analysis of a national database including rankings, specialty choices, and sex of FMG reveals surgical specialties becoming less attractive overall, with Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery being the most popular and Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery the least. Obstetrics and Gynecology were most popular among female candidates, while Orthopedic Surgery had the lowest representation. The proportion of female surgical residents increased over the study period. Overall, while some specialties remain attractive, many are losing appeal. Despite progress towards gender equity, further investigation is warranted to assess implementation.
