Abstract
Professor Jean-Michel Dubernard left us in 2021. He was the first in Europe to have performed a pancreas/kidney
transplant (1976). He was the first in the world to have done an allograft of the hand (1998), then a double bilateral
transplant of the hands and forearm (2000), and finally a partial face transplant (2005). The National Academy
of Surgery paid tribute to him during a conference in 2021, then by publishing a tribute book in 2023 by Editions
