Abstract
The prostate is surrounded by adipose tissue known as periprostatic adipose tissue. We know that the tumor microenvironment can play an important role in the development of cancer. We have carried out work to characterize this periprostatic adipose tissue, in comparison with a control extra-peritoneal peri-bladder adipose tissue. We have highlighted the particular organization of this tissue, with its characteristics of hypoxia, fibrosis and inflammation. We have also shown that this tissue does not expand in obese conditions.
Then, we showed that some patients had abundant periprostatic tissue. Having clearly defined the notion of abundance, we were able to characterize this abundant periprostatic adipose tissue. Abundant tissue is composed of hypertrophic adipocytes with no increase in inflammation. Abundance is promoted by remodeling of the extracellular matrix, which generates matrikines such as endotrophin, whose role in tumor progression has been described.
