Abstract

Neuropelveology and LION procedure

In the 1990s, the laparoscopy was introduced to the treatment of gynecological cancers and endometriosis. In order to reduce postoperative functional morbidities, Possover focused his attention on the pelvic nerves. Laparoscopy offers a unique access to all areas of the pelvis, while the magnification effect of the endoscope allows a perfect visualization of the nerves. He introduced the laparoscopic electrical nerve stimulation - the LANN technique, an innocuous technique allowing the functional exploration and preservation of the pelvic nerves during radical pelvic surgeries. Of this scientific work of more than 20 years, he developed a new medical specialty covering all diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of the pelvic nerves pathologies, the Neuropelveology. This discipline, on the border between pelvic surgery and neurosurgery, is a new hope for improvement for thousands of patients suffering from pelvic neuropathic pain conditions secondary to nerves damages and tumors. He will publish in 2014 the concept of laparoscopic implantation of pelvic nerve stimulation electrodes, the LION procedure. This innovative technique makes a recovery for walking with a walker/crutches in 70% of paraplegics. On his initiative, the International Society of Neuropelveology - the ISON - was created 2014 to promote the education of the medical community in neuropelveology.
