Abstract

The first cardiac surgery in Mauritius was done in June 1984 and afterwards several foreign teams have visited us. From 1984 to 1993, nearly one hundred patients were operated yearly and the number was increasing gradually. The government of Mauritius decided then to setup a local team. From 1993 to 1998, the foreign team visits gradually went down and the local team was confident enough to take over.
In June 1998, the cardiac centre was set up and the local team was able to tackle more and more complexe cases including pediatric surgery since 2004. Henceforth, fewer patients were referred abroad for adult cardiac surgery. Presently, we are doing more than 900 cases annually.
Patients from Rodrigues, Comoro islands and Madagascar are being referred to the Cardiac Centre every year for cardiac surgery and follow-up.
Our local team has done the first cardiac surgery in Madagascar the 28th of June 2008 and we have been doing cases on a regular basis up to 2011. This activity has been put to a stop due to unstable social conditions over there.
The 3rd July 2009 we performed the first cardiac surgery in Botswana and we were quite surprised to note that the prevalence of severe valvulopathy was superior than in Mauritius.
