Abstract

Linked with the worrying variability of practices and the considerable number of medical errors identified, patients and associations as well as political authorities are expressing an explicit and legitimate demand for a quality/safety requirement for the care provided and a guarantee of maintenance of competence for professionals. This is the objective of periodic certification - instituted by regulation or in the process of being instituted in most developed countries, and which has now been compulsory in France since January 1, 2023. This presentation presents the main existing models as well as their limits. We mainly describe the French model now at work and insist on the success factors of this system.
Indeed, it is more a change of culture and professional values than a simple legal modification. Professionals are ready to get involved, provided that these are acceptable and efficient programs, designed by peers, adapted to the specificities and problems of their discipline and which bring concrete improvements. It therefore remains for the professional representations to build such programs which will contribute to the maintenance of competence and skills and the improvement of practices. The accreditation of doctors and medical teams could be part of these programs.
