Abstract

Surgical support of the armed forces is done by forward surgical units, made up of robust and mobile equipment, and standardized medical and surgical teams. These teams must be trained and selected so that they can take care of the wounded in conditions of war and disaster. This specific training is organized by the Val de Grace School in Paris. It uses several modules of practical training, during each 3 days, and each module has a specific topic (limbs wounds, trunk wounds, head and neck, massive casualties situations…).
Practical workshops each last one day and are all supervised by professors of the chair of surgery applied to the armies. They use prepared or perfused anatomical subjects, or, for multivictim situations, role-playing games. All military surgeons, active or reserve, must have validated all modules before they can be deployed in a theatre of operations. The senior surgeons as well must attend one module each year for their Continuous Medical Education.
