Abstract

Surgery for obesity and metabolic diseases has been growing rapidly over the last 10 years. Robotic assistance is the most sophisticated laparoscopy available today, providing improved precision, vision, coordination, dexterity and comfort. Robotic assistance seems to be particularly interesting for operating on severely obese patients, but there is very little scientific data to support this hypothesis. The undeniable contribution is the comfort of the operator and his assistant, which had disappeared with laparoscopy. Robotic assistance could thus reduce the very frequent and underestimated musculoskeletal disorders, all the more so as bariatric surgeons are subjected to greater constraints linked to the morphology of the obese patient. Robotic surgery is not the future but the present and has its place in bariatric surgery. This will have to be evaluated by randomized studies.
