Abstract

Can we afford the luxury of a conflict when we know that it could cost us our lives?
It is deeply rooted in the safety culture of professional aviation crews, civil or military, that maintaining synergy in all circumstances is vital, in the proper meaning of the term. This philosophy was learned in the bloodshed by the crews who, at their peril, gave in to the stirs of their egos.
Managing the “conflict” risk involves both reducing the probability of its occurrence, by applying preventive measures, and limiting its impact if it does occur, by using efficient protections.
For the first point, anticipation, the clear distribution of tasks and responsibilities and the immediate return of experience greatly contribute to healthy transparency. The unspoken is not tolerated, before, during or after the action.
For the rare occurrences of a conflict, the implementation of simple tools makes it possible to rationalize the shared experience, and thus lay the foundations for a collective agreement.
