Abstract

The up to date surgery of groin hernias, ventral hernias and post incisional hernias is based on the teachings of H Fruchaud, FC Usher, R Bourgeon, C Read, L Nyhus, R Stoppa, J Rives, Jean Paul Chevrel and many others. Their work spread out between the years 1955 and the 1980s made them considered to be the pioneers of this relatively new specialty that is parietology.
Eugène Acquaviva from Marseille (south of France) was only very rarely cited in publications, and only as being a user of a nylon prosthesis in the 1940s.
At the request and under the impetus of Robert Bendavid the research and analysis of publications produced between 1944 and 1949 allow us to update the considerable work carried out by the author and his collaborators surgeons: P Bourret and D Corti; chemical engineer: R Couture; pathologist: HP Bonneau. Following this multidisciplinary collaboration, he was able to invent the first synthetic nylon reinforcement prosthesis, the crinoplaque, to carry out the first cure with such material of a post incisional eventration on May 16, 1944. Before JT Scales he defined the specifications of a good parietal reinforcement prosthesis from the point of view of these mechanical characteristics (flexibility, resistance ...), biological (biological tolerance, incorporation.) ... He defined the indications of this nylon mesh for the treatment of the incisionnal hernias, recurrent and even primary groin hernias. Before H Fruchaud, L Nyhus, J Rives and R Stoppa… He described surgical techniques with placement of prosthetic material in a retro muscular position for the medial incisionnal hernias, the use of the pre peritoneal space for small ventral hernias. The use also of the preperitoneal space with wide coverage of the inguinal and femoral area for the treatment of groin hernias.
This work makes it possible to consecrate Eugène Acquaviva as one of the founding fathers of modern parietology using synthetic reinforcement prosthésis . Many aspects of his work remain relevant in the era of laparoscopic extra peritoneal surgery and even with assistant mechanical operator (robotic).
