Abstract
Thoracic surgery is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Postoperative morbidity and mortality are reduced by pre per and postoperative protocols of care. Preoperative habilitation to surgery includes cessation of smoking, nutritional support, physiotherapy and physical training, and occasionally non- invasive ventilation. Peroperatively Protective ventilation and goal-directed fluid management decrease the incidence of postoperative complications. Postoperative rehabilitation includes adequate pain control, deambulation, and early oral feeding. Supportive care protocols need to be evaluated regularly.
