Abstract

Chronic pain presently is the principal complication of groin hernia repair. It occurs in approximately 10% to 12% of the cases and the percentage of disabling pain is around 0.5% to 6%. Possible improvement lies in four domains: better knowledge of the syndrome, identification of risk factors, treatment and overall prevention, since the treatment is complex and it is not always successful. Careful clinical examination aims at determining the cause of pain and its impact on the quality of life. The knowledge of risk factors can help improve prevention. The treatment is based on multidisplinary collaboration and multimodal measures. Non-surgical methods are always initiated first, in collaboration with a pain center. The surgical treatment takes place when other methods remained unsuccessful. It is essentially based on the triple neurectomy, possibly combined with other interventions, such as for instance meshoma removal. Since the proportion of failures is not negligible, stress should be put on the prevention, based on the choice of the best-adapted surgical methods. Keywords : Groin hernia. Chronic pain. Treatment.
