Breast Cancer and Ambulatory Surgery
Seance of wednesday 26 march 2014 (PROGRÈS RÉCENTS DE LA CHIRURGIE AMBULATOIRE EN CHIRURGIE DIGESTIVE ET SENOLOGIE)
Abstract
Ambulatory breast cancer surgery is not well developed in France. Only 5 per cent of breast cancer patients undergoing surgery were offered surgery as an ambulatory procedure. However, breast conserving surgery seems a good indication for this procedure with short operative time, few morbidity, few pain and many asymptomatic patients. The principal limiting factors were the non-motivating reimbursement policy (before March 2014), the complexity of patient’s management for small breast tumors (several practitioners involved) and the psychological environment inferred by cancer diagnosis. A strong organization before, during and after operative procedure, but also a large public advertisement are necessary to improve ambulatory in breast cancer surgery.
