Abstract

The use of live vertebrates is legally authorized for teaching activities. Lawmaker considered that to reach expertise, one has to be thought in the best possible way and restricted this activity by regulations. It commands to limit animal use and its replacement…Teaching of surgery to physicians or veterinarians, mandates repeating complex and sometimes invasive exercises, before being able to complete the management of a patient and implement the suitable therapeutic techniques. For experimentation, surgical procedures are not intended to reconstruction, but to implant devices or exogenic tissues or even to produce the most calibrated reproducible and constant deficit. Therefore theoretical knowledge and practical skills are essential to any operator. With the intent of total substitution, I developed practical skills on substitutes and anatomic pieces to skim through preparation, performance of aseptia, operation and management of main operative risks. The student, alone or in pair comprehends without stress local anesthesia or median laparotomy. A small group of participants contributes to interactivity, tailored follow-up and individual evaluation; each has the possibility to repeat the skill to reach mastery. Last stage of 3Rs (Replace, Reduce, Refine) (1), WASP Science (Without Animal Suffering and Pain) is recognized for its ethic approach and its quality by the Association des Vétérinaires Cantonaux (Switzerland). Since 2011, the Commission Nationale de l’Expérimentation Animale approved this teaching as the first of this type in France. Progress becomes inexorable!
