Abstract
Aim of the study : Idiopathic scoliosis is one of the most commonorthopaedic disorders that may develop into severe musculo skeletalproblem if not treated. The purpose of this study is to find an appropriatedevice for spine instrumentation.Material and method: Twenty eight patients, 8 men and 20 womenwith idiopathic scoliosis were treated between 1999 and 2004 in ourcenter. They ranged in age from 12 to 33 years. Follow-up was 1, 5to 4 years.Nine patients (32%) had posterior spinal fusion (P.S.F) and 19 patients(68%) had anterior (A.S.F) and posterior spinal fusion(P.S.F).Cotrel-Dubousset (C.D) system was used for instrumentation in 14patients and Harrington distraction+ sub laminar wiring system(H.D+S.L.W) in 14 patients. Results: Bleeding during operation was 455.5 cc with C.D systemand 438.5 cc with H.D+S.L.W system. Median operating time was4 h 26 mn with C.D system and 4 h 22 mn with H.D+S.L.W system.Curve correction was 63, 3% with C.D system and 64, 15% withH.D+S.L.W system. There was no significant difference betweenboth systems. Conclusion : Results in both systems are similar, but H.D + S.L.Wis an easier and low cost procedure.
