Abstract
Very precise combined work between multidisciplinary partners(radiation engineers in physics, engineers in biomecanics, medicalradiologists and orthopedic pediatric surgeons) lead to the conceptand development of a new low dose radiation device named EOS.This device allows 3 main advantages :- Thanks to the gaseous detectors for X Rays designed by GeorgesCHARPAK (Nobel Price 1992) the reduction of doses necessary toobtain a good image of the skeletal system is important : 8 to 10times less for 2D imaging, and 800 to 1000 times less for 3D reconstructionfrom CT scan cuts.- The accuracy of 3D reconstruction obtained is as good as a 3Dreconstruction from CT scan cuts.- In addition, the patient gets its imaging in standing functionalposition thanks to the X-rays obtained from head to feet simultaneouslyAP and lateral. This is a big advantage compared to CT scanused only in lying position.- From this simultaneous AP and lateral X-rays of the whole bodythanks to the 3D bone external envelop technique, the engineers inbiomechanics allowed to obtain 3D reconstruction at every level ofosteo-articular system and especially for spine in standing positionwithin an acceptable period of time (15 to 30 minutes).EOS (in spite of the evolution of standing MRI) allows more precisebone reconstruction in orthopedics especially at the level ofspine, pelvis and lower limbs, giving new consideration for physiology,physio-pathology and therapeutics.
