Abstract

Operating tables evolved rapidly from 1860 through 1920. Today, our operating tables resemble those developed in the early 20thcentury.The operating table is made of two parts: the column and the top.Anaesthesia and asepsis (Pasteur) were introduced, allowing thesurgeons to open body cavities with success. By 1920, the operatingtables were well designed for a wide variety of operations.Construction materials have certainly changed, positioning is muchmore concise, and electrical control has made positioning easier, but a flat surface at the height of the surgeon’s waist is still an integralpart of the basic design.
