Complications of Tension Free Vaginal Tape (TVT). A national survey.

Abstract

Background : To evaluate morbidity of tension free vaginal tapeprocedure.Method : Between June 2002 and June 2003, a questionnaire wassent to French gynaecologists and urologists. Participants reportednumber of procedures performed before January 2002, number ofper and postoperative minor or major complications.Results : Ninety two participants returned the questionnaire (21urologists and 71 gynaecologists). 12 280 TVT procedures werereported (median 100, min: 5, max.: 2100). Overall, 901 bladderinjuries were reported (7.34 %). For 809 patients (6.59 %) a completepostoperative urinary retention requiring catheterization wasnoted. There were 26 cases of vaginal defect healing (0.21 %).Retropubic or vulvovaginal hematoma was reported for 39 patients(0.32 %). Ten major organ injuries were reported (0.08 %): 1 obturatornerve injury, 3 bowel perforations, 4 vessel injuries and 2 uret -eral injuries.Conclusion: Risk of major complication with tension free vaginaltape is rare. These potential complications imply experimented surgeonsfor practice of tension free vaginal tape.
