Ectopic Pregnancy and Smoking: Causal Link, Lever for Prevention

Abstract

In France, ectopic pregnancy, about 2%, is still the cause of maternal mortality (3.5%). The aim of this presentation, based on a systematic review of the literature, is to demonstrate, between smoking and ectopic pregnancy, the causal link. This is described in all studies published since 1985, and also reinforced in some of them by the dose effect relationship. Analysis of a series of 304 ectopic pregnancies treated at the Limoges University Hospital, between 2009 and 2017, reinforces the interest in better preventing, detecting and managing stop smoking in women of childbearing age. The measurement of expired carbon monoxide (CO) and the management of smoking cessation, recommended by the "pregnancy and tobacco" consensus conference, can thus help to reduce the incidence and recurrence of ectopic pregnancies...
